Mobile users upgrading to smartphones at record rates, and choosing Android

2 hrs.

New numbers from ComScore show that users of feature phones are upgrading to smartphones?at record rates, and are overwhelmingly choosing Android for their new platform.

In April,?2011, just over 60 percent of feature?phone users chose to stay with a feature phone when they got a new one. In April of this year, that number is down to 50 percent; meanwhile, the proportion of?users choosing to upgrade to smartphones has gone from 38% percent?to 47.5 percent in the same period. It's the tipping point for smartphone adoption: it's very likely that within a few months, smartphone upgraders will outnumber feature?phone keepers.

Android is the platform of choice for these new users, according to ComScore's numbers: 61.5 percent of new smartphone users in April chose Android, while a significant but still much smaller 25.2 percent picked up?an iPhone. Meanwhile, 7.1 percent went with Microsoft and just 4.8 percent with BlackBerry.

This is likely due to the fact that Android phones are present on every carrier, often for free. Many people are simply?looking to get GPS and email on their phones, but are?not particularly interested in the premium features of more expensive Android models or the iPhone 4S. A cheap Android-based phone may not excite enthusiasts who keep up with the latest hardware, but as a free complement to a new carrier contract, it appears to be very compelling to customers.

The study comes on the heels of another by Nielsen concluding that two-thirds of all phones bought in the U.S. are smartphones. Now it appears that the remaining third, which was the subject of the ComScore's research, is going to be shrinking even faster than before.

NASA sees sun send out mid-level solar flare

ScienceDaily (July 19, 2012) ? The sun emitted a mid-level solar flare on July 19, 2012, beginning at 1:13 AM EDT and peaking at 1:58 AM. Solar flares are gigantic bursts of radiation that cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to harm humans on the ground, however, when strong enough, they can disrupt the atmosphere and degrade GPS and communications signals.

The flare is classified as an M7.7 flare. This means it is weaker than the largest flares, which are classified as X-class. M-class flares can cause brief radio communications blackouts at the poles.

Increased numbers of flares are currently quite common, since the sun's standard 11-year activity cycle is ramping up toward solar maximum, which is expected in 2013. It is quite normal for there to be many flares a day during the sun's peak activity.

Updates will be provided as they are available on the flare and whether there was an associated Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME), another solar phenomenon that can send solar particles into space and affect electronic systems in satellites and on Earth.

What is a solar flare? What is a coronal mass ejection?

GRAND Social ? Grandparent linky ? July 16 - Grandma's Briefs ...

Summer is my least favorite season, and this year it's proving to be my least favorite summer of all. My No. 1 reason? It's just too darn hot and dry. Even the deer are running through the sprinklers across the street any chance they get.

It's definitely too hot to go outside, and it's too hot to do much of anything productive inside. At least in my part of the world, at least today. Maybe it is in your part of the world, too. If so, I invite you to join me in grabbing an icy cold drink, settling into a comfy chair, and joining this week's GRAND Social.

How it works:

  • All grandparent bloggers are invited to add a link. You don't have to blog specifically about grandparenting, but you must be a grandparent who blogs.
  • Posts shared can be an old one or a recent one, your choice. I like to link up to older posts that current readers likely haven't seen.
  • To link up, copy the direct link to the specific post you want to share, not the link to your blog's home page. Then click the blue "Click here to enter" text below and follow the directions to add your post to the list.
  • You can add up to three posts, but no duplicates, please, and none you have promoted on a previous GRAND Social linky.
  • No contests, giveaways, or Etsy sites.
  • Adding a mention at the bottom of your linked posts, such as This post has been linked to the GRAND Social blogging event, is appreciated. Or, you can post the GRAND Social button using the following code:

Grandma?sBriefs.com

<a href="http://grandmasbriefs.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://grandmasbriefs.squarespace.com/storage/GRANDsocialbutton.jpg " alt="Grandma?sBriefs.com" width="125" height="125" /></a>

?

  • The GRAND Social linky is open for new posts through Wednesday evening, so please come back to see those added after your first visit.
  • If you're not a blogger, you have the pleasure of being a reader. All bloggers who link up would be honored to have you click, visit, read and comment.

READERS and PARTICIPATING BLOGGERS: Please visit the posts others have linked to by clicking on the thumbnail photos. Comments are always appreciated by the bloggers whose links you visit, even if it's simply "Hey, stopping by from GRAND Social."

(AP) ? The White House has asked Iraq to review the case of a Hezbollah commander who was accused of masterminding a 2007 attack that killed five American soldiers or hand him over to the United States, a senior Obama administration official said Thursday, though two Iraqi courts have declared him not guilty.

The case is a tricky aftermath of the long U.S. military campaign in Iraq that ended last year and has elements of both Iraqi and U.S. internal politics.

Ali Mussa Daqduq has been released from prison but is being held under house arrest in Baghdad's heavily-fortified Green Zone as Washington considers bringing U.S. charges against him. Daqduq, a Lebanese citizen, is considered a top threat to Americans in the Middle East and was detained for more than four years by the U.S. military before it left Iraq last December.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Antony J. Blinken, the national security adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, said the U.S. wants to keep Ali Mussa Daqduq locked up for as long as legally possible.

Blinken said the Obama administration also will file a request on behalf of the victims' families for Iraq's highest appeals court to review and correct its June 25 order to free Daqduq. But he said the U.S. asked to extradite Daqduq even before the final court ruling declaring him not guilty.

"The process has not concluded," Blinken said Thursday. "It is still ongoing."

He said the White House has consistently urged Baghdad to use any legal means to prosecute and detain Daqduq "for the crimes he committed on Iraqi soil, including any crimes against U.S. service-members."

"And that has been a constant message," Blinken said.

Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar, spokesman for Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council said the appeals court ruling is final and there are no charges pending against Daqduq. Ali al-Moussawi, media adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, said he was unaware of any U.S. request to extradite Daqduq.

The U.S. believes Daqduq plotted a brazen 2007 raid on a military camp in the holy Iraqi city of Karbala that killed five American soldiers. He is accused of working with Iranian agents to train Shiite militias to target the U.S. military.

A debate between the Democratic White House and Republicans in Congress over whether high-risk terror suspects should be brought to the U.S. for trial stalled the case against Daqduq last year. He was handed over to Iraqi authorities as required when American troops left Iraq.

Since then, two Iraqi courts have cleared Daqduq of the terrorism and forgery charges that Iraq's government lodged against him. Iraqi government officials acknowledge they have little, if any, legal basis for continuing to detain him.

U.S. auditors estimate American taxpayers have spent about $10 billion since 2003 to rebuild and strengthen Iraq's justice system after decades of abuse under deposed dictator Saddam Hussein. Releasing Daqduq now, however, would crimp White House efforts in the run-up to the U.S. elections this fall to show that President Barack Obama aggressively pursues terrorists.

"The judiciary system said its final say: that he's innocent and needs to be released," said Daqduq's attorney, Abdul-Mahdi al-Mitairi, a political follower of the anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

"The political pressure from the American side has prevented Daqduq's release," al-Mitairi said. "He has not been released yet because the Iraqi government seeks U.S. support and it doesn't want to embarrass Obama ahead of the elections."

Issued quietly and without any announcement, the appeals court order leaves little doubt that Iraq will not push harder to pursue Daqduq.

"The defendant denied in the investigation and the trial any role in the crime, and his denial was not refuted by any hard evidence or any eyewitness account," the five-judge panel wrote in its decision.

Attorney Al-Mitairi said Iraq's government is violating its own laws by refusing to free his exonerated client. On Thursday, two senior Iraqi officials said the government has decided it must abide by the court rulings and release Daqduq, and it is trying to find a way to do so without angering the White House. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Blinken would not say if Daqduq would be tried in a federal civilian court or a military commission if he is extradited. Iraqi officials and legal experts note the U.S. missed its chance to prosecute Daqduq before he was transferred to Baghdad's custody.

Republican lawmakers said Daqduq was too much of a public threat to incarcerate on American soil, and wanted him to be held at the contentious military detention center at the Navy base on Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Obama refused. He has promised to close the detention center at Guantanamo, which became a worldwide symbol of detainee abuses during the Republican administration of President George W. Bush.

Jonathan M. Winer, a lawyer and terrorism expert who headed the State Department's international law enforcement office during the Clinton administration, said Daqduq's case essentially slipped through the cracks because it had not been carefully monitored or coordinated.

"It would be terrible to let this guy out onto the street," Winer said. "But it violates the rule of law to keep him detained. It is a huge problem, and it is the result of systematic mistakes due to not thinking it out ahead of time."

A senior Obama administration official in Washington said Pentagon's office of military commissions has prepared charges against Daqduq but cannot officially accuse him of the crimes unless he is in U.S. custody. The official predicted it's unlikely Daqduq will ever be brought to the United States. He spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive legal and diplomatic issue candidly.

Pentagon spokesman Army Lt. Col. Todd Breasseale declined to comment on whether the charges would be issued but said "Mr. Daqduq should be held accountable for his crimes."

Siberian wildfire smoke means rosy sunsets in Seattle

Gil Aegerter / msnbc.com

The sunset in Seattle, Wash., on Sunday drew this crowd at Gasworks Park.

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

The Pacific Northwest?and Canada's British Columbia?can thank Russia for some fantastic sunsets in recent days. Smoke from several dozen wildfires in Siberia has been wafting over the Pacific, turning the skies a brilliant red and orange at dusk. The downside has been some rather hazy daylight at times.

"It isn?t uncommon for smoke from large wildfires in Siberia to be lofted high enough into the atmosphere that winds push plumes of it across?the Pacific Ocean to North America," NASA noted on its Earth Observatory website while showing a satellite view of the smoke.

In Seattle, University of Washington meteorologist Cliff Mass tipped off followers of his blog?that the smoke would produce some red sunsets along the coast and northwest parts of the state.?

But the smoke has also meant some haze, especially farther north in British Columbia,?Claire Martin, a meteorologist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.,?said on the CBC website.

"It's looping below the Aleutians and then back to Vancouver," Martin said of the smoke.

NASA last month reported its scientists were tracking the smoke now that wildfire season has started in Russia and other parts of Asia.?

"The smoke plumes were lofted up to at least 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from the intense heat of the fires," NASA scientist Colin Seftor stated of an event in early June. "At that point the smoke got picked up by higher level winds."

"Not only smoke and dust can get carried long distance," he added. "Pollutants, and even disease-carrying spores can be carried by the prevailing winds."

Microsoft has already expressed its fondness for Perceptive Pixel's gigantic capacitive touchscreens, which became apparent during a live demo at the company's Windows 8 presentation at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, but now that friendship has become a bit more official. During Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference keynote in Toronto this morning, Steve Ballmer announced that Perceptive Pixel would be coming in-house, with Microsoft acquiring the display maker. The move seems to be in line with the company's recent shift to hardware manufacturing, beginning with last month's Surface introduction and its reinforced commitment to the recently renamed PixelSense smart table solution -- MS has just seized an opportunity to get a bit more hands-on. Full (limited) details are in the press release after the break.

What to know before July 9 'Internet doomsday' arrives

15 hrs.

Internet users scanning their Twitter feeds or Facebook accounts Sunday might want to add one more quick click to check their computer for malware.

Thousands of people around the country whose computers were infected with the?malicious DNSChanger software more than a year ago faced the possibility of not being able to get online after midnight EDT.

At 12:01 a.m. EDT, the FBI planned to shut down the Internet servers set up as a temporary safety net to keep infected computers online for the past eight months. The court order the agency obtained to keep the servers running expired, and it was not renewed.

The problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of more than 570,000 infected computers around the world. When the FBI went in to take down the hackers late last year, agents realized that if they turned off the malicious servers being used to control the computers, all the victims would lose their Internet service.

In a highly unusual move, the FBI set up the safety net. The bureau brought in a private company to install two clean Internet servers to take over for the malicious servers so that people would not suddenly lose their Internet.

The FBI arranged for a private company to run a website ? http://www.dcwg.org ? as a place where computer users could go to see if their computer was infected by DNSChanger,?and find links to other computer security business sites where they could find fixes for the problem. (If you want a quick check of your computer's status, the FBI-authorized dns-ok.us site is fast ? no software is?required for the scan.)

From the onset, most victims didn't even know their computers were infected, although the malicious software probably has slowed their web surfing and disabled their antivirus software, making their machines more vulnerable to other problems.

Many computer users don't understand the complex machines they use every day to send email, shop and cruise for information. The cyberworld of viruses, malware, bank fraud and Internet scams is often distant and confusing, and warning messages may go unseen or unheeded.

Also, some people simply don't trust the government, and believe that federal authorities are only trying to spy on them or take over the Internet. Blogs and other Internet forums are riddled with postings warning of the government using the malware as a ploy to breach American citizens' computers. That's a charge the FBI and other cybersecurity experts familiar with the malware quickly denounce as ridiculous.

Still, the Internet is flooded with conspiracy theories:

"I think the FBI just wants everyone to go to that website to check our computers so they can check our computers as well. Just a way to steal data for their own research," one computer user said in a posting on the Internet.

Another observed: "Yet another ploy to get everyone freaked out ... remember Y2K."

There also is an underlying sense that this will be much ado about nothing, such as the approach of 2000. The transition to that year presented technical problems and fears that some computers would stop working because they were not set up for the date change. In the end there were very few problems.

Considering there are millions of Internet users across the country, several thousand isn't a big deal, unless you're one of them.

Rep. Jim Langevin, D-R.I., and co-founder of Congress' cybersecurity caucus, said computer uses have a responsibility to practice good sense and make sure their computers are not infected or being hijacked by criminals.

"These types of issues are only going to increase as our society relies more and more on the Internet, so it is a reminder that everyone can do their part," he said.

FBI officials have been tracking the number of computers they believe still may be infected by the malware. As of Wednesday, there were about 45,600 in the U.S. ? nearly 20,000 less than a week ago. Worldwide, the total is roughly 250,000 infected. The numbers have declined steadily, and recent efforts by Internet service providers may limit the problems on Monday.

Tom Grasso, an FBI supervisory special agent, said many Internet providers have plans to try to help their customers. Some may put technical solutions in place that will correct the server problem. It they do, the Internet will work, but the malware will remain on victims' computers and could pose future problems.

Other Internet providers are simply braced for the calls to their help lines.

By Monday, if you can't read this online, those customer support lines will be your only solution.

Charting autism's neural circuitry: Deleting single gene results in autism-like behavior and immunosuppressant drug prevents symptoms

ScienceDaily (July 2, 2012) ? Deleting a single gene in the cerebellum of mice can cause key autistic-like symptoms, researchers have found. They also discovered that rapamycin, a commonly used immunosuppressant drug, prevented these symptoms.

The deleted gene is associated with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), a rare genetic condition. Since nearly 50 percent of all people with TSC develop autism, the researchers believe their findings will help us better understand the condition's development.

"We are trying to find out if there are specific circuits in the brain that lead to autism-spectrum disorders in people with TSC," said Mustafa Sahin, Harvard Medical School associate professor of neurology at Boston Children's Hospital and senior author on the paper. "And knowing that deleting the genes associated with TSC in the cerebellum leads to autistic symptoms is a vital step in figuring out that circuitry."

This is the first time researchers have identified a molecular component for the cerebellum's role in autism. "What is so remarkable is that loss of this gene in a particular cell type in the cerebellum was sufficient to cause the autistic-like behaviors," said Peter Tsai, HMS instructor of neurology and the first author of this particular study.

These findings were published online July 1 in Nature.

TSC is a genetic disease caused by mutations in either one of two genes, TSC1 and TSC2. Patients develop benign tumors in various organs in the body, including the brain, kidneys and heart, and often suffer from seizures, delayed development and behavioral problems.

Researchers have known that there was a link between TSC genes and autism, and have even identified the cerebellum as the key area where autism and related conditions develop.

In both cases, deleting this gene caused the three main signs of autistic-like behaviors:

  • Abnormal social interactions. The mice spent less time with each other and more with inanimate objects, compared to controls.
  • Repetitive behaviors. The mice spent extended amounts of time pursuing one activity or with one particular object far more than normal.
  • Abnormal communication. Ultrasonic vocalizations, the communication technique among rodents, were highly distressed.

The researchers also tested learning. "These mice were able to learn new things normally," said Tsai, "but they had trouble with 'reversal learning,' or re-learning what they had learned when their environment changed."

Tsai and colleagues tested this by training the mice to swim a particular path in which a platform where they could rest was set up on one side of the pool. When the researchers moved the platform to the other side of the pool, the mice had greater difficulty than the control mice re-learning to swim to the other side.

"These changes in behavior indicate that the TSC1 gene in Purkinje cells, and by extension, the cerebellum, are a part of the circuitry for autism disorders," emphasized Sahin.

The researchers also found that the drug rapamycin averted the effects of the deleted gene. Administering the drug to the mice during development prevented the formation of autistic-like behaviors.

Currently, Sahin is the sponsor-principal investigator for an ongoing Phase II clinical trial to test the efficacy of everolimus, a compound in the same family as rapamycin, in improving neurocognition in children with TSC. The trial will be open for enrollment until December 2013.

"Our next step will be to see how the abnormalities in Purkinje cells affect autism-like development. We don't know how generalizable our current findings are, but understanding mechanisms beyond TSC genes might be useful to autism," said Tsai.

This study was supported by the National Institutes of Health (R01 NS58956), the John Merck Scholars Fund, Autism Speaks, Nancy Lurie Marks Family Foundation, Children's Hospital Boston Translational Research Program, the Children's Hospital Boston Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (P30 HD18655).

Sahin serves as a consultant and site primary investigator for Novartis.
